Indicators of star formation : 4000 Å break and Balmer lines

چکیده

The behaviour of the 4000 Å break index and of the equivalent width of the main Balmer lines is investigated a) for a single star as a function of effective temperature, gravity and metallicity and b) for a single stellar population as a function of age and metallicity. Consequences for the interpretation of integrated spectra are presented.

The Differences of Star Formation History Between Merging Galaxies and Field Galaxies in the EDR of the SDSS

Based on the catalog of merging galaxies in the Early Data Release (EDR) of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS), the differences of star formation history between merging galaxies and field galaxies are studied statistically by means of three spectroscopic indicators the 4000-Å break strength, the Balmer absorption-line index, and the specific star formation rate. It is found that for early-typ...

Spectroscopic Study of Blue Compact Galaxies II. Spectral Analysis and Correlations

This is the second paper in a series studying the star formation rates, stellar components, metallicities, and star formation histories and evolution of a sample of blue compact galaxies. We analyzed spectral properties of 97 blue compact galaxies, obtained with the Beijing Astronomical Observatory (China) 2.16 m telescope, with spectral range 3580Å – 7400Å. We classify the spectra according to...

Resolving the Stellar Populations in a Z = 4 Lensed Galaxy Based in Large Part on Observations Made at the W. M. Keck Observatory

We present deep near-infrared Keck/NIRC imaging of a recently-discovered z = 4.04 galaxy (Frye & Broadhurst 1998). This is lensed by the rich foreground cluster Abell 2390 (z ≈ 0.23) into highlymagnified arcs 3–5 in length. OurHand K -band NIRC imaging allows us to map the Balmer+ 4000 Å break amplitude. In combination with high-quality archival HST/WFPC2 data, we can spatially resolve stellar ...

Stellar population models to predict the H Balmer and HeI lines in absorption are presented. Models are computed for burst and continuous star formation. It is found that the Balmer and HeI line profiles are sensitive to the age, except during the first 4 Myr of the evolution, when the equivalent widths of these lines are constant. The comparison of these lines with the corresponding nebular em...

The Star Formation Histories of Local Galaxies: Continuous or Intermittent?

We explore a model in which efficient star formation in galaxies is triggered by merging satellites. We show that the merger/interaction rates predicted by hierarchical galaxy formation models depend strongly on galaxy mass. If a merger of a satellite larger than 1% the mass of the primary triggers efficient star formation, low-mass dwarf galaxies experience strong bursts separated by quiescent...
